Cutting

Characteristics:

• Relativelylow thermal conductivity • High abrasion resistance
• Greater tendency toward preparation-induced deformation•Higher sensitivity to heat accumulation in the cutting zone
• Increasedrisk of mechanically disturbed surface layers during sectioning

More Attention:

• Coolant delivery directlyinto thecutting zone • Control of heat buildup during sectioning
• Feed severity and overall cuttingaggressiveness • Condition of the cut edge after separation
• Integrity of thenear-surface region before moving to grinding

Avoid:

• Thermal disturbance of the cutsurface• Smeared or dragged edges
• Deepmechanically damaged layers
• Preparation-induced surface deformation
• Excessive subsurface damage thatincreases later grinding effort

Mounting

Characteristics:

• Many titanium specimens are evaluated close to thesurface or edge • Edge preservation is often critical to interpretation
• Thin, irregular, or feature-specific specimensare common
• Mountingheat, pressure, or shrinkage can influence specimen condition • Mounting quality strongly affects later edge retention

More Attention:

• Strength anduniformity of edgesupport • Accuracy of specimen orientation
• Shrinkage behavior of themountingmedium
• Risk of excessiveheat or pressure during mounting
• Stability of the specimen within themountbefore grinding begins

Avoid:

• Poor edgeretention
• Shrinkage gaps aroundthespecimen  • Distortion introduced during mounting • Loss of the intended observation plane
• Early alteration of sensitive near-surface features

Grinding

Characteristics:

• Combination of abrasionresistance and relativelyhigh ductility • Slower material removal than many routine metallic materials  • Greater tendency toward dragging and smearing
• Higher risk of retaining damage fromthe previous step
• Flat-looking surfacesmay still contain residual preparation damage

More Attention:

• Whether theprevious damagelayer has actually been removed • Whether the grinding surface is still cutting effectively
• Whether the specimenis being ground flatrather than smeared • Condition and wear state of the grinding medium
• Surface conditionbeyond simple visual flatness

Avoid:

• False flatness
• Draggedmetal across the surface • Smeared layers
• Retained sectioningdamage
• Unclear structuralboundaries before polishing

Polishing

Characteristics:

• High susceptibility topolishing-related deformation • Pronounced tendency toward scratching
• Abright appearance doesnot always indicate a deformation-free surface • Near-surface and edge regions are especially sensitive
• Final surface qualityis closely tied to preparation-induced damage control

More Attention:

• Whether finepolishingis removing damage or only improving appearance • Presence of residual smearing beneath a bright surface
• Condition of edge zones andnear-surfaceregions • Clarity of fine structural boundaries
• Whether the final surfaceis suitable for reliable metallographicinterpretation

Avoid:

• Brightbut mechanically disturbed surfaces
• Residual deformationlayers
